The Deaf community has pulled together to enact a comprehensive
service organization called Project N.A.D.I.N.E. which stands for the
National Advocates on Deafness to Inform, Network and Enrich. A
not-for-profit foundation, Project N.A.D.I.N.E. was established in
early 2008 by CEO and Co-founder Windell K. Smith Jr. and COO and
Co-founder Stephanie Green Nichols, both having deaf family members.
The company is based in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma but will have branches
and networks all across the country.
The goal of Project N.A.D.I.N.E. is to provide comprehensive support
services to the deaf and hard-of-hearing including: leadership
training, unbiased resources to parents with deaf children, increase
awareness of Deaf Culture and American Sign Language with the goal to
reduce misconceptions about deafness, provide information and training
about the various aspects of deafness and the impact on communication,
education and cultural identity, training for Sign Language
Interpreters, and to enact, develop and collaborate with programs, and
initiatives which support the goals of the company.
The first board of directors was selected, and an executive board was
voted; Gary Davis, Chair, Anna Harman, Co-Chair, Rene Snelson and
Alene White, Secretaries, Stacy Stoops, Treasurer, Alan Logan, Chris
Reagle, Christy McDonald, Lisa Mathes, Natalie Ludwig and Rene Sites.
The majority of the board is deaf with a ratio of eleven to two, which
matches the overall theme of the organization; to be a service company
to the deaf by the deaf.
When asked what impact Project N.A.D.I.N.E. would have on the deaf
community CEO and Co-founder Windell K. Smith Jr. said “We
anticipate Project N.A.D.I.N.E. will become an epicenter for the deaf,
by the deaf. The founders, board and volunteers do this because of a
personal attachment we each have to this beautiful community. To bring
positive change to the silent world, and to the interpreters who
artistically take spoken language and turn it into a hand painted ASL
picture.”
Ashley Cavallaro brings her expertise to Project N.A.D.I.N.E. as the
new Director of Outreach and Community Relations. Ashley has already
begun working on innovated ways of generating income and awareness to
Project N.A.D.I.N.E. which will rely heavily on public donations, and
fundraisers.
