FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Students Converge to Experience Art and Creative Expression for
ARTSign 2009 at the Texas School for the Deaf

Austin, Texas FEBRUARY 26, 2009 High school students from deaf
schools in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, New Mexico and Texas
converge in Austin today for a weekend of complete art immersion.

ARTSign 2009 is a symposium bringing deaf and hard of hearing high
school students from Texas and surrounding states to participate in
art workshops, performances, and exhibits. Demonstrations and
workshops will feature many deaf professional and amateur artists as
teachers. Other activities include live drama and musical performances
and visits to area art museums – including a stop at the Blanton
Museum of Art and the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas.

Since 1987, ArtSign has been held bi-annually with hosting honors
rotating among the five participating schools. This year, the Texas
School for the Deaf (TSD) has assembled an impressive list of
presenting artists and talented performers.

Renowned comedian/performer, CJ Jones, will be the master of
ceremonies for the weekend and lead drama workshops with students. For
more than 30 years, Jones has shared his talents with deaf and hearing
students at schools, events, and universities across the country and
around the world. Having appeared on Broadway, in television, video,
and on the big screen, he has experienced what he calls the “double
whammy” of being an actor who is both deaf and black. Jones
vigorously spreads the message to students and adults alike, that
being different does not mean being less worthwhile.

With a full weekend of experiential opportunities and hands-on
activities alongside artists, students attending ARTSign will express
themselves in photography, video technology, jewelry, mosaics,
culinary arts, creative drama and musical interpretations using
American Sign Language, and more. The spotlight turns on the students
to close each evening by showcasing their talents in live performances
and film productions. The goal of ARTSign is to expose young adults to
as much art, in as many forms possible in a short weekend, and help
bridge the gap at a time when art programs in many schools are
struggling.

With a strong belief in culture and community at TSD, students form a
unique identity based on their individual strengths and talents. At
TSD, students learn, grow, and belong. For more information about TSD,
