We at the Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities would
like to remind you about a few things coming up soon that you and your
community will want to know about.
First, remember that the Barbara Jordan Media Awards for print and
video productions released in 2008 will be awarded to the winners in
the Awards Luncheon coming up on June 12. The Arlington Mayor’s
Committee on People with Disabilities will host the event, which will
be held at the newly opened Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. In fact,
ours will be one of the first events to take place in the stadium! As
an added bonus, the Cowboys folks have offered a tour of the stadium
facilities for participants to take place immediately after the
luncheon. For more information, ticket prices, and a list of the Award

Second, please help us keep an eye out for nominations for the
Barbara Jordan Media Awards for 2009. Any print, video, or radio
production involving a person with a disability is eligible, and we
encourage nominations from any source, including self-nominations.
These awards are a wonderful way to ensure that the general public
becomes more aware of disability issues, including disability
etiquette and respectful portrayals of people with disabilities. For

Also, keep in mind that the 2008-09 Employment Awards submission
deadline is coming up soon – June 30. These are important in the
community also to encourage awareness and respect for disability
issues in the workplace. There are several categories, including the
Entrepreneur Award (for a business owner with a disability) and the
Governor’s Award (for a Local Committee that has exhibited exemplary
