Leglislative Forum planned for Houston – GHID
Greater Houston Interpreters for the Deaf (GHID) is hosting a Legislative
Forum on January 16, 2010. Presented by Billy Collins, this workshop is a
reprise of the forum held in San Antonio in 2009. If you were unable to
attend that event, you may have heard the rave reviews from those who did
attend. This is an opportunity to catch up on what you missed!
Have you ever wondered… Who decided that we needed a specific certification
to interpret in a Court setting? And whose idea was it to establish a
separate set of qualifications for Medical interpreting? And while we’re at
it, why is it that K-12 interpreters must be certified, but not interpreters
working in colleges and universities?
Advocating change in policy and legislation is working within an established
system in order to create change in organizations, service systems, laws,
and policies. Although it is more work, a systems advocacy effort is needed
when policies or laws present a problem for a group of individuals and the
problem is expected to recur continually. Where this effort is directed
depends on the nature of the problem and which organization (or
organizations) has authority over the problem area.
This workshop will address the stages of systems advocacy and provide
participants with the tools to impact public policy and legislative change.
Systems advocacy efforts can be demanding and challenging, yet an exciting
undertaking. The process requires care, thought, and commitment, but is an
endeavor where the payoffs are well worth the effort
