DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Plans, organizes and directs the operations and administration of the
Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities, in accordance with applicable
City of Houston Ordinances. Serves as Liaison between the Mayor, City
Council, City Departments and other public and private entities on matters
pertaining to people with disabilities in the greater Houston Metropolitan
Area. Provides technical advice and professional administrative support for
initiatives of the Houston Commission on Disabilities. Assists in
developing, coordinating and formulating policies and legislation relating
to all people with disabilities, and assists in overseeing the
implementation of programs consistent with such policies and legislation.
Acts as a public advocate for the rights and needs of all people with
disabilities; assists in coordination of compliance with all federal, state
and city laws concerning people with disabilities. Maintains demographic and
statistical data regarding people with disabilities. Plans and implements
special projects as needed or assigned. Provides information and assists in
the planning and prioritizing of allocations for enhancing services and
facilities for people with disabilities. Provides day to day coordination
and/or oversight for the Aging and Disabilities Resource Center.

The position is physically comfortable, the individual has discretion about
walking, standing, etc.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Business
Administration, Accounting, Finance or a closely related field to activities
of the division.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Seven (7) years of progressive professional experience closely related to
the activities of the division are required with at least 3 in a supervisory
capacity. A Masters Degree in Business Administration, Public Administration
or a field closely related to the activities of the division may be
substituted for two years of experience. Directly related professional
experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year for
year basis.
MINIMUM LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
None
PREFERENCES
Preference will be given to applicants with knowledge and experience in
interpreting the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Ability to interact
with high profile political and civic leaders in the community. Extensive
leadership and program monitoring skills with the ability to effectively
present and advocate for the disabled population in the greater Houston
Metropolitan Area.

qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this
