HCIL workshop for Youth with Hearing Disabilities – Houston
Good morning:
I am Darla Connor, Independent Living Specialist for Deaf Services for the
Houston Center for Independent Living (HCIL). HCIL is a self-help,
self-advocacy organization for people with disabilities. HCIL is observing
America’s National Disability Employment Awareness Month in October.
HCIL will be hosting a workshop for Youth with Hearing Disabilities from the
age of 14 to 21, who want to transition from high school to college and /or
work. HCIL is networking with Communication Axess Ability Group (CAAG) in
order to facilitate this workshop. CAAG has a DARS funded new project called
the Transitional Outreach Program (TOP). The workshop is scheduled for
Thursday, October 6, 2011 from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m., here at the HCIL office at
6201 Bonhomme Road, Suite 150-S, Houston, Texas 77036.
TOP is designed to benefit students who might fall through the cracks for
whatever reason in their schools. TOP provides information, services and
products they need to transition from high school to the workplace or to
college; most at no cost to the students or their families.
The TOP is set up to help in the following ways:
1. Those students who are not Deaf Ed students, who may or may not be
Special Ed Students. But perhaps are labeled 504 or not labeled at all.
2. Students who have failed their school hearing tests or have told the
school nurse or counselor of their struggles.
3. Students who have a hearing loss that is addressed with hearing aids,
cochlear implants, and they are functioning well in school.
4. Students who are approaching graduation from High School.
Youth themselves, their parents, service providers, teachers, counselors,
speech therapists and audiologists, etc., who work in the school system
would greatly benefit from this workshop to learn how the TOP works and how
it can benefit young people with a hearing lost disability.
Please let others know about this HCIL workshop on October 6th, and please
contact me direct if you will be able to attend workshop. If you have any
questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. My contact information is
listed below. If you will attend, please let me know that as well.
Thank you in advance and HCIL looks forward to seeing you on October 6th.
Light refreshments will be served.
