For Immediate Release
It’s spring in Corpus Christi, and all community members are gearing up
for the annual North of the Border Games for the Deaf – a multi-region
collaborative of deaf people with sports interests and skills. This
year’s Games will be held on April 21 at Cabaniss FIeld in an all-day
celebration of softball, football, volleyball and other activities.
Entertainment, food and additional activities will also be available
during the day, which runs from 9 AM – 6 PM.
To raise funds and awareness of the Games, the Steering Committee is
sponsoring a free Car Wash at Firestone – 5417 McArdle Road at the
corner of Staples on March 24 from 10 AM – 6 PM. We have on hand
experienced washers, who have enrolled sponsors for their work at a
rate per car. The more cars washed, the higher the collection from
sponsors, so we anticipate multiple hundreds of car being washed for
free!
To participate as a ‘washer’, contact Mari or Dani at the numbers above
or at [email protected] Washers should recruit sponsors to help
generate funds, but we also welcome those who just want to help with
the dirty work! Sean Hill, Event Coordinator says: “Help us to maintain
Corpus Christi’s reputation as a place where deaf people of all ages
can be comfortable and active. Join us to encourage sports and
community involvement in our youth and teens!”
Donations are gratefully accepted, and are as important as the
individual sponsor funds we raise. Donors of more than $20 will
received a letter for tax purposes within 30 days of the car wash
event.
The public are welcomed, and any business or company that would like to
sponsor through corporate participation may promote their business and
‘deaf friendly’ services through contribution, display of
banner/presence of booth at the car wash and/or the actual Games. An
official corporate sponsorship form is available by contacting Ms.
Rivera or Ms. Ocker, above.
Everyone should be present at this day of fun and water! How often can
anyone find a good car wash for free with drinks, snacks and materials
for services and events in the deaf community will be available for
those who are present. Sign language students, interpreting students
and friends and families of deaf people and the public are welcome to
attend.
Media professionals are asked to contact Mari Rivera to assure that
communications and escort are available for the event, for any desired
photo or interview opportunities.
