FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

REPRESENTATIVE EDDIE RODRIGUEZ PRESENTS AWARDS TO ‘GOING GREEN’ STUDENT ART CONTEST WINNERS AT TEXAS SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF

GREEN SCHOOL MAKEOVER INSPIRES ECO-CONSCIOUS GENERATIONS OF THE FUTURE

Austin, Texas – April 27, 2012 Student artwork is on display today and open to the public throughout the day, Friday April 27, at the Texas School for the Deaf (TSD), as the school nears completion of its Green School Makeover.

The competition asked students to share their personal message demonstrating why it’s important to care for our environment and how we can all do our part to GO GREEN, now, and for the sake of future generations. The art contest is a result of the school’s recent selection as the top winner of Global Green USA’s Green School Makeover Competition, sponsored by Pureology.

Students’ creativity includes various forms of artistic expressions demonstrating what GOING GREEN means at TSD. Awards will be given for 1st – 3rd place in four different age groups. State Representative Eddie Rodriguez will be on hand to present awards to the winners in the elementary categories at 11:00 am.

Guest judges from the community, including Francisco Villa of Francisco’s Salon and Riley Buckner, of Eco-Wise – both neighbors of the school from the South Congress business district – scored student’s work earlier this week,

Late last year, TSD was chosen from more than 220 entries from public, private and charter K – 12 schools across the country. The school was nominated for the Green School competition thanks to Villa, whose relatives attended TSD back in the 1950’s.

The makeover totals $130,000: $65,000 for school renovations and an additional $65,000 worth of technical assistance for the school, including a film documentary of the entire makeover project.

The student art contest is just one component of TSD’s ultimate Green School Makeover, which also includes the installation of energy efficiency and sustainability upgrades, such as:

* Improved energy efficient lighting: Replacing older lighting fixtures now allows for the use of energy efficient bulbs. Cost savings from the energy efficient upgrades will be reinvested back into the education programs.

* Water conservation: With new rain barrels to collect for watering the school grounds, and hands-free faucets in all student lavatories, the school will reduce water usage and consumption.

* Waste reduction: Hands-free hand dryers in restrooms will reduce paper use and save materials from going to the landfills, therefore reducing supply costs and staff time previously needed for replenishing paper towels and emptying trash. TSD spends $20,000 in bottled water annually; with tap filtration systems instead of using bottled water, the school saves funds that can be reinvested into education.

* Recycling: With more recycling bins across campus next to trashcans, TSD will increase the amount of materials collected and recycled, reduce trash going to landfills and make recycling easier for students and staff, campus-wide.
