AUSTIN — 142 Texas women lost their lives because of domestic violence
in 2010.

Thursday hundreds gathered at the Four Seasons hotel to remember and
honor them and raise money to stop this troubling trend.

KVUE anchor Terri Gruca was honored to emcee the event, which included
Texas Speaker Joe Strauss and Academy Award-winning actress Marlee
Matlin.

Known for her inspiring work in front of the camera, many people don’t
know that she is a survivor of domestic violence. She says she often
gets asked why she stayed in an abusive relationship.

“I had no answers,” Matlin said through a translator. “Maybe because I
was used to it or it made sense to me. I mean, I was sexually abused by
my baby sitter, sexually molested by my teacher, and now beat up by my
very well-known boyfriend. Maybe in the back of my head it seemed to
fall right into step.”

Matlin says it took her years to realize she was strong enough to ask
for help.

She’s currently working on a project that will allow 35 million deaf
and hard of hearing people in America to text 911 for help.
