TO MEMBERS OF THE DEAF COMMUNITY, OR THOSE WHO SERVE THEM IN EDUCATION, CHURCHES, CLINICAL INSTITUTIONS
Earthen Vessels, The Sandra Organ Dance Company presents its annual
Favorite, “AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS” at the Margaret Alkek
Williams Dance Lab in the new Houston Ballet Center for Dance downtown! This lovely venue will be the perfect setting for this ballet choreographed with American Sign Language (ASL) by James Sewell of Minneapolis. Performances will be held Saturday and Sunday, Dec 17and 18 at 1:30 pm and 7:00 pm.
“AMAHL” is absolutely accessible to the deaf community with a special two for one ticket rate (only $6 per person!) for the first twenty purchasers for each show! –this is a 50% savings! There will be an American Sign Language interpreter present to facilitate ticketing and announcements before the show, as well as discussion with performers afterwards. Here is what Terold Gallien had to say about it:
“I am a deaf guy and instructor for the Sign Language and Deaf Education. I went to see the ballet, AMAHL, and was heartened to see how effectively that hearing casts used their sign language skills in relating the story. I was shocked, amazed, inspired and appreciative of their sign language communication skills. It made me thrilled and impressed also. I enjoyed watching it because of the signing…and I am proud how of effortlessly it was performed. This show is very significant for the Deaf Community in Houston Metropolitan area, as it could lead to a wonderful involvement with other regional deaf school programs as well as to recognition by Deaf Educators in our community.”
This show is a great group outing and family friendly event that honors the holiday season, and its truest meaning. The story is that of a widow and her disabled child, who are visited by the three wise men. It’s a heartwarming opera sung in English, that was made for television in the 1950’s–a wonderful introduction to opera and ballet, for all generations…and it’s only an hour long!
Please consider bringing your friends and families, AS TICKETS FOR THE DEAF COMMUNITY AND ANY THAT ACCOMPANY THEM ARE HALF PRICE ($9!) as general admission is $18. Check out www.evsdance.org for more information!
Come and celebrate the 15th season with Earthen Vessels, as we offer this production along with two others to round off our programming.
“Amahl” is part of a Holiday Series package, that includes a Sacred Dance concert at an area church March And, of course, there’s the Company’s 15th Anniversary season during Black History Month “ELEMENTALLY EARTHEN” February 22, 2013, with extra shows reserved for students, home school groups and senior groups during the day!
Sandra Organ Solis founded Earthen Vessels after 15years as Houston Ballet’s first African American ballerina, and founded this contemporary ballet ensemble to promote contemporary dance, educate and diversify the audience with “dances they can get.” She is not only a choreographer, but a master teacher, performs sacred dance in church settings and leads choreographic workshops at spiritual retreats.
