Educational & Experience Requirement: High school graduate or G.E.D. equivalent.
Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution is desirable. Two years’ professional experience providing sign language interpreting services, including one year of experience interpreting college-level classes or related experience. Two years’ experience in interpreting college-level classes preferred. Basic or Level I certification with the Texas Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) or comparable certification with the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) required. Advanced or level III or higher BEI certification preferred. Certification and experience as TypeWell or C-Print provider in post-secondary settings, or ability to obtain such certification within one year of employment. A combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.
Nature & Purpose of Position: Assists the Sign Language Coordinator with coordination and provision of services for students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing.
Primary Responsibilities: Provides sign language interpreting for SSD clients in academic courses and educational activities. Assists with coordinating and monitoring real-time and post-production captioning/transcription services provided by contract vendors for SSD clients.
Provides essential-meaning (e.g., TypeWell or C-Print) captioning services for SSD clients in classroom settings. Provides training to SSD clients and their course instructors in use of assistive listening devises in classroom settings. Researches developments in adaptive technology for deaf students. Assists with proctoring exams during peak testing periods.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Other Specifications: Requires proficiency in all phases of work and above-average typing, reading, and communication skills. Interacts effectively with diverse populations and various departments of the university. Knowledge of adaptive technologies for deaf students preferred. Primarily classroom and office work environments, with occasional outdoor assignments (e.g., interpreting campus tours for prospective students). Work schedule may vary from normal working hours as required by client course schedules and special activities. May require travel to SHSU satellite campuses.
