OSD grads hit close to home

Pauls Valley, Oklahoma — Students from Pauls Valley and Paoli will be among those graduating from the Oklahoma School for the Deaf this week.

Trynecka Olivia Sheffey of Pauls Valley and Nathan Christopher Coon of Paoli will both take part in the commencement ceremony set to begin at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 21 in the OSD gym at Sulphur.

The OSD 2014 graduating class also includes Rodolfo Apolinar Jr. of Ardmore, Amber Marie Cooper of Lane, Erika Nicole Gillihan of Sulphur, Ty Blake Jenkins of Sulphur, Alex Christopher McCool of Choctaw, Nico Angelo McCormick of Moore, Melissa Susie Pace of Sulphur, Amy Lenn Pena of Altus, Morgan Renee Ponder of Tulsa, Haylee Tess Reynolds of Swink and Breanna Lynn Winfree of Guthrie.

“This has been a great group of students,” OSD Superintendent KaAnn Varner said.

“I look forward to seeing what this group of graduates accomplish.”

OSD is a division of the Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitation Services (DRS), a state agency which assists Oklahomans with disabilities through vocational rehabilitation, education, employment, independent living programs and the determination of medical eligibility for disability benefits.

OSD has been located in Sulphur since 1908.

OSD provides residential and day school educational services at no charge for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.

The school provides a range of outreach programs, including pre-school programs and onsite consultation for public school students, their families, public school districts and communities statewide.
