Christine Lynn Buchholz
CB was born on July 17, 1953 in San Bernardino, California. Fast forward, she graduated from Riverside School for the Deaf and earned her bachelor’s from California State University, Northridge. One strong adjective describing CB is her pioneering spirit. She was ahead of many of us, taking the lead in the deaf HIV/AIDS national educational campaign; establishing with other co-founders Deaf Women United; serving as editor in chief for the North Coast Deaf News; and advocating for domestic violence support for the deaf community. This is a quick snapshot and does not take into consideration entirely her impact on us … her community/our community.
Another adjective that has her pegged is “community activism”. She always asked hard questions and made us think! Even in her last position working for DARS (a state agency in Texas), her perspective challenged the status quo. While she was a staunch advocate (“it’s the right thing to do”), her kindness and love for her family, friends, colleagues, and acquaintances was unwavering and heartfelt. Her red-headed fiery personality amid twinkles in her eyes will never be forgotten.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully recommends donations to deaf/hard of hearing services at The Safe Place. The website is http://www.safeaustin.org/. Checks can also be mailed to PO Box 19454, Austin, Texas 78760.
CB is survived by her parents, Edward and Dorothy Elliott of Shippenville, PA; one uncle, Donald Hagan of Lancaster, CA; one aunt, Lida Schwabenbauer of Marble, PA; and many cousins.
Her world was full of many wonderful friends all over the nation.
