The “Intangibles” of Interpreting:
An NCTID Community Forum
In addition to our upcoming mentorship series and spring workshops specifically created for DDDBDHH community members, NCTID is excited to invite you to a forum and discussion panel intended to launch a series of events that we hope will elevate the status of our local interpreting profession and renew a positive relationship between the interpreting and D/deaf communities of the DFW area.
We are borrowing a concept from the world of sports to enlighten our understanding of what the Deaf community expects from us as service providers. Many of you have seen posts and VLOGS or participated in discussions with Deaf individuals about their use of interpreters. Consumers often reference a list of preferred interpreters, and will describe developing that list based not only on interpreters’ skills, but maybe more importantly, on a list of “intangibles” that make them trustworthy and dependable professionals.
You may read this and wonder: What are those qualities? How can I get on their lists? Or: I’ve been doing this for years! My certification should speak for itself! Or even: I’m new at this. How can I become that type of professional?
