WHY TEACH SIGN LANGUAGE FROM BIRTH
Tuesday, March 8, 2022
Austin, Texas – March 8, 2022 – Texas School for the Deaf (TSD) welcomes Gallaudet University President, Roberta J. Cordano, to Austin. Cordano is in town to speak at SXSW EDU today, at 11:00 a.m. at the Austin Convention Center.
As part of SXSW EDU’s accessibility and inclusion track, Cordano talks about why it’s important, whether deaf or hearing, for everyone to learn sign language, and strongly suggests to start exposing young children to sign language at birth.
Cordano also visits TSD, Friday, March 11, 2022 to meet prospective Gallaudet students and families, and hosts a luncheon for local Gallaudet University alumni on the TSD campus, March 12, 2022.
Cordano is the 11th president of Gallaudet University – the world’s only liberal arts university for students who are deaf and hard of hearing, in Washington, D.C. She is the fourth deaf president and the first deaf female president in the university’s history.
“It’s great to see SXSW include a Deaf person of important significance in its’ programming, TSD Superintendent, Claire Bugen, said.
“We welcome the opportunity for SXSW attendees to learn why this vibrant language, American Sign Language, is important for all of us.”
