Big Brother or Big Sister D/HH Initiative

Big Brother or Big Sister D/HH Initiative

Hello!

Recently we sent an email highlighting the many benefits Big Brothers and Big Sisters can add to lives of Deaf and Hard of Hearing children.   We asked ‘What If’? Deaf and Hard of Hearing students had an opportunity to be partnered with a mentor.  Will you and the members of your organization help us make the ‘What If’? a reality?

Would you consider becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister? Or forward this email to others you know who might have an interest, either in becoming a 'Big Brother or Big Sister' or a 'Little Brother or Little Sister'?  Read the program description below and find out more by visiting our website at:  http://www.bbbstx.org/dhh.

GOAL: The program goal is to provide Deaf and Hard of Hearing youths guidance and companionship through one to one relationships with caring volunteers who assist them in achieving their highest potential. With the DHH Initiative, Deaf and Hard of Hearing youths spend quality time with volunteers to help them navigate their challenges, celebrate their successes and build confidence in their dreams.

SAFETY: Making sure both the youth and the volunteer are safe is the number one priority for BBBS. Background checks, training, interviews and regular contact with a professional BBBS employee are all part of the support you will receive from Big Brothers Big Sisters.

TIME: The time commitment is a few hours each month which you can do at your convenience.

FACE-TO-FACE VISITs: Mentors and students will meet in-person for about 2 hours once every couple of weeks. We have found that most folks can easily incorporate this into their busy schedules.

REQUIREMENTS: To be a mentor, you need to be at least 21 years old and have some interest in and or familiarity with the Deaf or Hard of Hearing community.  Youths must be able to communicate; have at least a basic level conversation with their ‘Big’ mentor starting at age 7 through 10th grade.

Please visit our website if you have questions or interest:  http://www.bbbstx.org/dhh or email questions to [email protected]

Thanks!
