DAVIDEO PRODUCTIONS HOSTS THIRD DEAF FILM SHOWCASE IN SEGUIN, TEXAS

Seguin, Texas- Davideo Productions is hosting its third showcase of Deaf and accessible films on August 18 & 19, 2006. This event, CINEMA FOR EVERYONE, presents films to the Deaf Community and the general public in Seguin, Texas at the Historic Palace Theatre on 314 South Austin Street. Past events have successfully drawn hundreds of people from all over the State of Texas as well as out-of-state visitors.

The August 2006 showcase is being sponsored by the Texas Association of the Deaf (TAD), a consumer organization advocating the rights of Deaf and hard of hearing Texans. Its president, Steve Baldwin, says that “TAD is delighted and proud to sponsor this great cultural event! CINEMA FOR EVERYONE is a unique experience.” To receive the 50% off of one year’s membership to TAD, attendees need only submit their movie ticket stubs to their nearest TAD representative.

CINEMA FOR EVERYONE is a venue created to showcase independent films. David H. Pierce of Davideo Productions says “we serve as a regular theatrical exhibitor to give filmmakers a place to show their latest productions and get a share of the box office receipts. The third CINEMA FOR EVERYONE film showcase has enlisted the involvement of established companies such as Filmquadrat-Munich , Dawn Pictures, CSD-TV, Blue Apple Productions, and DeafHope/Mosdeux.

The film offerings are varied to suit a variety of audiences’ tastes. A German-produced 35mm feature film, TOUCH THE SOUND, headlines the event on the 19th. It’s a documentary on Grammy-winning percussionist Evelyn Glennie who happens to be profoundly deaf. This highly visual film effectively demonstrates how sound is interpreted through touch rather than hearing which is of benefit to deaf musicians like Glennie.

Another documentary of special interest is LIVES OF DEAF MEXICANS which was shot in Mexico and produced by Dawn Pictures. It focuses on the educational setbacks, communication obstacles, and limited employment opportunities facing Deaf Mexicans. Mexican Sign Language is used in the documentary and there are two showings scheduled; one with English subtitles and a special showing with Spanish subtitles for the Spanish-speaking community.

DR. HAND and BLUE APPLE by Blue Apple Productions are films scheduled during the children’s presentation. DR. HAND won the prestigious 2006 Telly Award and is about a magician that goes on a journey to help a young boy’s “illness”. BLUE APPLE is about students who want to take revenge on their teacher through black magic.

Other films include NO TALKING ALLOWED by CSD-TV which portrays a frustrated Deaf artist who cannot seem to find a model that will pose without talking too much and TILL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE DO US PART by DeafHope/Mosdeux whose story effectively shows that domestic violence does not always involve physical abuse.

The event also offers a live comedy performance in American Sign Language by Franky Ramont, an Austin, Texas-area storyteller, performer, and actress. It will be held at Chiro Java Internet Cafe on 114 South Austin Street. Coffee and sandwiches will be served in this comfortable social atmosphere. Late night socialization will be held at The Oak Bar on 110 East Gonzales Street.

Pierce says “when people come to historic Seguin, not only can they enjoy watching films but also joining in the camaraderie of the patrons at these social events. It makes the trip to Seguin worthwhile. Hope to see all of you soon!”
