Deaf Awareness Day at UT-Austin

Hello!

University of Texas (UT) at Austin is hosting their first annual Deaf Awareness Day event on campus, October 25th! From 10am to 2pm there will be informational booths from UT sponsored programs (Services for Students with Disabilities, ASL Program, DeafACT, SADA) and Austin Community College’s (ACC) Interpreting Program and Deaf Studies Association! This will be held on the Flawn Academic Center Courtyard outside (rain or shine).

In the evening from 6-8pm, we have a guest speaker, Don Miller, Professor with Austin Community College, presenting on ‘Deafhood’ in Mezes Hall, 1.306 (auditorium). Here is a synopsis of what to come from this presentation:
Based on Dr. Paddy Ladd’s book, Understanding Deaf Culture: In Search of Deafhood, What is “Deafhood”? What was life like for Deaf people before and after 1880? What is “colonialism” and how does it apply to the Deaf World? We will talk about the difference between deafness and Deafhood. We will review several short films made by Deaf people to gain a better understanding of the Deafhood. Some hopes and challenges of preserving, practicing, and respecting ASL for the future will be addressed.

Events are open for anyone and FREE! – come one, come all! If you’d like more information – it can be found on our website at: http://deanofstudents.utexas.edu/events/ssd_deafaware.php or contact Lauren Kinast: [email protected]
