Retha Isla Morse
1913 – 2006

Retha Isla Morse, 93, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006, in Granbury.

Funeral: 3:30 p.m. Friday in Greenwood Chapel. Burial: Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation: 1 to 3 p.m. Friday.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Goodrich Center for the Deaf, 2500 Lipscomb St., Fort Worth, Texas 76110.

Born Retha Isla Smoot in Grimes County on Sept. 26, 1913, to Oliver Hugh and Mary Myrtie Smoot, Retha resided in Houston for many years before moving to Fort Worth in 1960. She was an accomplished seamstress, making her own clothes for most of her life. She was also an expert leather worker, employed by Roy Smith Boots, L. White Boots (now Leddy’s) and Justin Boots. She performed the delicate stitchery on the sides of handmade western boots, including a pair made for Roy Rogers. She was well known in the deaf communities of Dallas and Fort Worth, and was a longtime Baptist. She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, LeRoy Morse.

Survivors: Son, Larry Morse, of Olathe, Kan.; brother, Melvyn Smoot; niece, Linda Vaubel; and nephews, Gary Smoot and Marlin Smoot, all of Tucson, Ariz.
