“It’s all in the voice!!” Are you a VRS interpreter? Do you just want to improve your interpreting skills? This workshop offers a web or mapping approach to identifying problems or obstacles during the Interpreting process with a focus on VRS interpreting; however, this model is applicable to all interpreting venues.

The workshop is designed as a share-shop in which intermediate to advanced interpreters can apply interpreting techniques in a non-evaluative, non-judgmental, encouraging environment. Participants will identify: language appropriate to a target audience, when verbal descriptions are equivalent; appropriate tonal color, and register choices to be applied. Participants will engage in a lively PowerPoint presentation discussion, view video clips of ASL signers from varying demographics and socio-economic backgrounds, apply interpreting strategies in a team, and then use a Mapping/Web strategies to: Identify a Problem, brainstorm approaches, and highlight the approach which is most successful to overcome the obstacle. Miscues, errors and mistakes are an unavoidable part of the interpreting process and are welcomed so that error and correction analysis procedures are in place and can be applied. This model is distinguished from others as it offers ways to develop strategies and
techniques for error analysis, recognizes problem areas as an unavoidable part of the interpreting process, and it encourages
ways to achieve a smooth transition toward a fluid interpretation.
