Unraveling the Mystery of Self-Employment in the Arts is for anyone interested in pursuing a career in the literary, visual, musical, or performing arts and the support network of family members, business partners, vocational rehabilitation counselors, and transitional youth counselors.

David Hammis, co-author of Making Self-Employment Work for People with Disabilities, will discuss how to start and maintain a business, Social Security issues and systems concerns, blending funding sources, using existing laws (i.e., IDEA, The Rehabilitation Act, The Workforce Investment Act) to fund and support a business, as well as individualizing plans and support models. Using community and classroom exercises, problem solving, and individual case studies, you will learn the fundamentals of:

* Business planning
* Business feasibility testing
* Marketing
* Sales
* Financial planning

David Hammis, a Senior Partner at Griffin-Hammis Associates, has worked in supported employment since 1988 and is personally responsible for the implementation of over 250 Plans for Achieving Self Support (PASS) leading to employment, selfemployment, and personal resources for people with disabilities. He has developed over 175 jobs, including a significant number of entrepreneurial successes for individuals with severe and multiple disabilities.

In July 1996, David received the International Association for Persons in Supported Employment Professional of the Year Award for his “Outstanding support and commitment to people with disabilities especially in the areas of career development and the use of Social Security Work Incentives”.
