“Theatre in the Sky” Takes Bernard Bragg on Road for NAD and WFD

Renowned performer to bring one-man show around the nation

SILVER SPRING, MD – The National Association of the Deaf and the World Federation of the Deaf are pleased to announce that Bernard Bragg has embarked on a multi-city tour of the United States, performing his one-man show, “Theatre in the Sky.” The tour, which successfully kicked off in Austin, Texas, on Nov. 11, includes skits, poetry, newly developed songs, and mime.

“‘Theatre in the Sky’ is designed to be a humorous, sometimes ridiculous but always heart-warming look back on my experiences of traveling the world. I wanted to do this show for two special reasons,” Bragg said. “First, I love to entertain people from all walks of life, especially hearing parents with deaf children students studying American Sign Language, mainstreamed students, cuers, people studying to become interpreters, and others. Secondly, Deaf people here in America have, in the past two decades, become more and more intertwined with other Deaf people across the world, thanks to international theatre and film festivals, conferences. I share my stories and perspectives in this tour, and hope that audience members will recognize the value of joining forces to support our organizations, especially for deaf people in developing countries.”

All proceeds from the show will be donated to the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) and the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD). “The increasingly urgent need for private citizen support in combating deprivation of Deaf people’s communication rights around the country and world is yet another prime reason I decided to do this show,” said Bragg. “The proceeds will help the efforts of the NAD and the WFD to bring about change in education, employment, health care and social attitudes towards deafness, especially in developing countries.”

“This new and exciting tour is a fantastic opportunity for people to come together and be awed by the magnificence of American Sign Language and the Deaf world as uniquely portrayed by Bernard Bragg, who is our very own national treasure,” said NAD Chief Executive Officer Nancy Bloch. “We at NAD are deeply indebted to Bernard Bragg’s efforts to raise funds to support NAD and WFD in their fight to ensure the rights of the Deaf community nationally and globally.”

“The World Federation of the Deaf applauds Dr. Bernard Bragg’s exemplary career as a world renowned, appreciated and revered maestro of the stage. His newest production, ‘Theatre in the Sky’, gives the audience a bird’s eye view of life on the wings with Bernard Bragg,” WFD President Markku Jokinen added. “The WFD deeply appreciates Bernard Bragg’s noble work to enhance cultural knowledge while at the same time raising needed funds for NAD and WFD.”

Bragg is an accomplished actor, director, playwright and lecturer and is a founder of the acclaimed National Theatre of the Deaf. His acting career spans fifty years and has reached every corner of the world. Bragg, upon invitation, studied with famed mime Marcel Marceau in Paris, and has appeared in television productions such as “And Your Name is Jonah,” among many others. He was awarded an honorary doctorate in Human Letters from Gallaudet University, and was recently honored as “The Father of Deaf Theatre” by the International Center on Deafness and the Arts.

National sponsors include the National Association of the Deaf, World Federation of the Deaf, DawnSignPress, Sprint and T.S. Writing Services.
