A number of Austin American-Statesman staff members garnered state and national journalism honors for work on individual and group projects.

The National Headliner Awards honored 11 current and former Statesman staff members, who competed against journalists from some of the largest newspapers in the country.

The awards were established in 1934 by the Press Club of Atlantic City, N.J.

Nine current and former Statesman staff members — Vasin Douglas, Jay Janner, Jorge Sanhueza-Lyon, Zach Ryall, Linda Scott, Mary Coppinger, Robert Calzada, Kristi Kingston and Sue Whaley — were part of a team that won the award for best online journalism by a newspaper for the “Leave or Die” series written by Elliot Jaspin of the Cox Washington Bureau.

Mike Leggett received the best sports column award, and Kevin Robbins won third place in the sports writing category.

Robbins also won the Texas Daily Newspaper Association’s Fred Hartman Award for sports writing, which is given each year for a portfolio of work. The award alternates annually between large and small newspapers.

The Texas Classroom Teachers Association gave the statewide Silver Apple award to reporter Raven Hill for outstanding education coverage at a newspaper with a circulation of 50,000 or more.

The Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities chose two Statesman staff members to receive Barbara Jordan Media Awards for their work reporting on and photographing people with disabilities.

Reporter Brad Buchholz won for “Joe’s Victory,” a story about a basketball player at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School, and photographer Kelly West won for pictures she took at the Texas School for the Deaf as part of the story “A Sign of Belonging.”
