Pronominal systems (pronouns) are efficient, subtle and one of the hardest aspects to acquire for second-language learners. There are simple linguistic explanations for this complexity. This workshop will begin with an overview of some foundational linguistic principles of pronouns. These principles will guide participants during activities designed to identify ASL pronominal strategies. There is a lot of fun small group activity planned to allow participants to develop both knowledge and practical application for continued development in use of pronouns in ASL.

Lecture: Linguistic Principles of Pronominal Systems

o Why study pronominal systems?
o Phonology and Morphology

Instructor-led Activity: Identifying Pronoun Systems

o What other forms do pronouns take?

Small group break-out activity: Video text analysis (1 hour)

Large group: Sharing discoveries of pronoun strategies

Wrap-Up: Post-test, evaluation

*one hour lunch break
