Letter from Rev. Sam Carpenter

Hello, this is Sam from the Deaf Church @ Northern Hills in San Antonio.

This message is going out to many persons from San Antonio as well as other cities. I writing to inform you that we at the Deaf church are seeking to learn how the Deaf church can better serve the spiritual needs of the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community in our area. We know that there are thousands of Deaf & HH here in the San Antonio area, yet only a small number attend church regularly.

Also, of the small number of Deaf & HH in our churches few, if any, are serving in leadership positions – especially as pastors. Why is this? Why are there not more Deaf & HH in church, and why are so few serving God as leaders in our churches? Also, I am very concerned about the fact that there are so few Deaf & HH children and teens in our churches. This is not good. I know God loves our Deaf & HH children and teens. I know that Jesus died for their sins. I know that God wants them to know him and experience his love and forgiveness. I am calling on you to help us change this awful situation.

If you are a Deaf or HH Christian, or if you know other Deaf or HH Christians here in San Antonio or the surrounding area, I would like to invite you and them to join us at the Deaf Church @ Northern Hills on Saturday, June 16 from 3:00 – 6:00 pm. We will have a brief time of fellowship and then we will have a time of discussion on how we can all work together to share the love of Jesus Christ with other Deaf & HH who do not know Jesus. This is not a denominational event. Methodist, Baptist, Church of Christ, Assembly of God, Catholic or any other church name- doesn’t matter!

The goal of this meeting is for us to all share our ideas and suggestions on how we can share Jesus with Deaf & HH who do not know him. Please pray for this event. And please come. Your input is important. Our focus will be to learn from Deaf & HH Christians how YOU learned about Jesus. How did you come to believe in Jesus and become a Christian? We want to learn your stories. What inspires you to go to church? Did someone you love and trust inform you about Jesus? Did you learn about Jesus at TSD or another school? Did a friend or a family member inform you of Jesus? How did you learn about him? What is your advice on how we can help Deaf & HH today learn about Jesus? Your story – your advice is very important. Please come and share your story.

Tell your Deaf & HH friends and family members about this meeting and encourage them to come and share their story with us. Help us reach more Deaf & HH for Jesus.

Again, this will be Saturday, June 16 at 3:00 pm at Northern Hills Church, located at 3703 N Loop 1604 East, San Antonio. This is near the intersection of Loop 1604 and Bulverde Rd in the NE part of San Antonio. Check this website for a map to the church: www.nhumc.org. Deaf Church will provide hot dogs for this fellowship. We would appreciate it if you would inform us if you are coming. That way we know how many hot dogs we will need. If you have a health problem so that you cannot eat hot dogs, please let us know so we can provide something appropriate for you, or simply bring something for you and your family.

Please respond to this message and let me know if you will come or not – yes or no.

Thank you and God bless you. I hope to see you on the 16th.
