TCD – May 2007 Newsletter

Remember our deaf club is named T E X O M A Council for the Deaf, not T E X A S Council for the Deaf. Some people were confused between Texoma and Texas. There were too many names with Texas – Texas School for the Deaf(school), Texas Associate for the Deaf (Austin, Texas), and many more. The first name for our council was “Wonderland of the Deaf” back in 1976, but after two or three years, they changed the name to Texoma council for the Deaf.

Deaf Network website provides a place for announcements, flyers, sign language classes, church events, workshops, schools, deaf clubs, sports, and other information every day for Texas Deaf News. The website was started by Grant Laird Jr.

FINALLY there is a very beautiful new logo for TCD. TCD members are happy with the new logo. The logo comes in three colors – red, blue, and white. The president, vice president, and treasurer already have polo shirts with the logo.

We appreciate Lynn Randolph for designing flyers, letter head, and any other paper with the new logo. When we run out of the old logo paper, we will replace it with the new logo. There are three more weeks to go before the TCD deaf summer picnic on Saturday, June 16th , at Waterloo lake park in Denison, Texas. Shelia Bills has already ordered and received some items for the picnic. Shelia Bills and Deborah Young worked hard to get some items from stores and will be raffled off at the picinic. All proceeds from the raffle will go to the TCD fund.

Scott and Charles Randolph made a homemade bingo ball cage. It really looks good.

At the social night at the Quality Inn in Sherman, Texas, there were several new faces and we enjoy meeting new people. Shelia Bills and Deborah Young went to the store to get the items. Also they worked very hard on the booth to show TCD’s mission, our history, past presidents and interpreters. We need TCD office equipment, our own office and we try to find the sign language class for them to come. President Lisa Wynn wanted to thank Shelia Bills and Deborah Young for all their hard work for the social night. Shelia Bills kept control on expenditures. Scott and Lynn Randolph made the poster. Scott worked the bar area to sell the sodas, got the banner and t-shirts for TCD, which looked very nice.

The TCD website is almost finished, finally. Hopefully it will be ready in June 2007 for everyone to see. We hope to get the website name www.texomadeafclub.com, but it is not official yet. Please be patient and we will announce when it is up as soon as possible, along with the address. President Lisa Wynn would like to thank Dave who made the program for TCD.

Shelia Bills went to the Sherman Herald newspaper to give them information about the TCD events, information, and other things. Sherman Herald newspaper did print it on Sunday. Several people did notice the newspaper article. It was very interesting because hearing people asked TCD about sign language if TCD provides. Just want to let you know that TCD is working on it. TCD has to find a place to hold the classes, get supplies, etc. We will announce soon in Sherman Herald newspaper, deaf network, and websites. Hearing people want to come sign language class at TCD in Sherman, Texas instead of driving too far. Shelia Bills, Deborah Young, and Lynn Randolph will work on plan for sign language.

We have Car Wash on June 2, 2007 – Saturday that we need your help to bring your vehicle to come to Long John Silver’s in Sherman, Texas. The location is at Long John Silver’s , 1828 Texoma Parkway, Sherman, Texas 75090. Support our TCD fund.

Lisa Wynn will get all members and work on BY-LAWS and CONSTITUTION, to change some of it as soon as possible.

Lisa Wynn works on the newsletters every month to tell you what’s going on and what’s news. Hope to have TCD successful in the future.

It has been brought to our attention that the FCC is planning to cut the rates for Video Relay Service (VRS). We need everyone’s help to write to the FCC to stop these cuts. We (deaf people) need VSR because it is easier to use than relay services and better than TTY/TDD. We prefer to keep Video Relay Service (VRS). Tell anyone in United States about this. Thank you for your attention. Please mail it before June 30, 2007.

If you are interested in becoming a member of TCD, send us your contact information by email to [email protected], so we can send you our newsletter and information on events in and around Sherman/Denison. You can check out the Deaf Network that advertises our activities and events. TCD Member fees are $10 per year for singles and $15 per year for families. Please send check or money order to Texoma Council for the Deaf, P.O. Box 2002, Sherman, Texas.

We are still looking for volunteers for secretary, event coordinator and event photographer for TCD. If anyone is interested in one of these positions, please email Lisa Wynn, the President. We are desperately looking for someone willing and motivated to fill these positions. Lisa Wynn ask anyone if they are interesting to be Board of Director.

If you have ideas or comments on how to help improve our TCD to provide better service to members and non-members, please send them to Lisa Wynn – email [email protected] . Thank you in advance for your input.

We want to say thank you again to each member for their help and support.

Thank you,
Lisa Wynn
