CORPUS CHRISTI — In the last hour before dinner was to be served, campers in three teams of four and five silently put the last touches on meals of sloppy joes, spaghetti and baked chicken that they served to their parents Friday at the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Center of Corpus Christi.

The participants in the Summer Voyage camp spent the morning shopping for their groceries before putting together an entree, salad, vegetable and dessert.

The task was a competition for deaf and hard of hearing youth.

The camp at the center provides hearing-impaired children with an opportunity to interact with others their own age who communicate in a similar way, organizers said.

“In summertime, especially because they’re deaf, there is a great deal of isolation because there aren’t a lot of kids who can communicate with them,” said Lorri Hill, assistant camp director.

“We want to provide social activities and learning experiences as well. They have a good time, and they spend time with people who can communicate with them.”

For Estele Gonzalez, 11, the day camp — especially the swimming — is her favorite thing each week.

“I would be bored, bored, bored, bored, bored if I weren’t here,” she said.
