A MESSAGE FROM THE DAD PRESIDENT:

8/01/07

Hello Members and Friends of DAD;

It’s unbelievable that July came and went without hitting over 100 degrees in the Dallas area. I’ve lived here through three summers and this summer is the first time I’ve seen the grass and trees looking so green and healthy. I hope more of this kind of summer will continue to come in the future.

I would like to share with you about the second, out of a series of four, workshops with 20 individuals participating, “Becoming a Self Advocate: Getting the Job Done!”, which was co-sponsored by both DAD and DFW Area Deaf Hard of Hearing Service (DFWA). This workshop was given by Teresa Dell, PWI Employment Specialist. It was a very educational and empowering workshop and I felt it was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

And this workshop resulted in forming a more ‘one-on-one’ individual session opportunity on October 20 for those who need assistance with their resumes or want to make their resumes look more attractive. This resume workshop will be led by both Teresa Dell and Tashee Gates. Check the website for more information as time comes.

We had three different cropper/stamper consultants at our clubhouse during month of July. Several participants were very new and had a wonderful time learning how to be more creative making their own personal cards, scrapbook with pictures, and “homemade” Christmas cards. After they got the “taste” of being croppers/stampers, they wanted MORE! So I have decided to form DAD’s First Croppers/Stampers Retreat! If you are interested, please reserve Sep 28-30 and check out the flyer from www.dallasdeafclub.org/pdfs/flyer_20070928-29_scrapbook-wkend.pdf for more information and to make your reservation.

I want to hit a few spotlights about our upcoming events:

August 3, Friday 8:00 pm; Tejas Storytelling. Let’s hear all those stories given by Gene & Peggy Helmick-Richardson (it will be interpreted).

August 4, Saturday; North Texas Deaf Poker. They will kick off their 2nd year. And CSDVRS will purchase the food in support of DAD. Thanks, CSDVRS!

August 11, Saturday all day/night; Dallas Black Deaf Advocates, which is also hosting the SW Regional Conference. Dr. Glenn Anderson is guest speaker.

August 25, Saturday 9am – 3pm; Defensive Driving, to be presented by Holly Wayman. Lunch will be provided by the Deaf Action Center.

September 7, Friday 7:30pm; Social Security Presentation. Here is your chance to have a better understanding about SSA & Medicare.

September 15, Saturday 9-12pm; third “Becoming a Self Advocate: Getting the Job Done!” presented by Tashee Gates, DARS counselor.
