Advocacy Coordinator
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
A. Advocate for the rights of people with disabilities.
B. Planning and implementing a Disability Sensitivity and Etiquette
training program.
C. Attend and participate in Public Forums, County and City council
meetings.
D. Conduct individual and systems advocacy.
E. Establish and implement a network of organizations, agencies and
community leaders.
F. Conduct community and grassroots organizing.
G. Document consumer case progress on data base.
H. Educate the community about disability rights.
I. Responsible to stay on top of legislation that concerns disability
issues and share information with Volar Staff.
J. Assist other coordinators within the Volar CIL office in
conducting training for specific purposes.
K Make periodic Volar CIL presentations in support of outreach
program.
L. Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Qualifications:
1. Bachelors Degree in related field or at least three years of
successful work experience with demonstrated advocacy experience.
2. Excellent communication skills in both: oral and written.
3. Understanding of the Independent Living Philosophy.
4. Knowledgeable of community resources.
5. Experience in working with people with disabilities.
6. Experience with ADA, IDEA, Section 504, etc.
7. Knowledgeable of personal computers (MS Office, Internet
Communications, etc.)
8. Bilingual (English/Spanish).
