Deaf/Hard of Hearing Youth Leadership and Transition Camp

The Office for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services (DARS/DHHS) is happy
to announce its 2008 Rising Stars Youth Leadership and Transition
Camp, June 15th  20th at Peaceable Kingdom Camp in Youngsport (near
Temple/Killeen). Deaf and Hard of Hearing students will have the
opportunity to develop leadership skills and a positive attitude
towards hearing loss, while striving to achieve their maximum
potential.

The camp is FREE! Participants will be empowered and learn how they
can participate in the transition process from high school to
college, work, how to interview for a job and when (and if) to
disclose disability during the interview process. Participants will
also learn about leadership, independence, diversity and
self-identity through outdoor activities that promote and encourage
development of confidence through ropes courses and other team
building activities.

Applicants must be a high school sophomore, Junior or Senior who are
deaf/hard of hearing and at least 16 years of age by June, 2008.
Nominations are to be made by school and/or vocational rehabilitation
professionals. Deadline is March 1, 2008.

Traveling to/from the camp-site is the only cost. Applicants who need
assistance with traveling expenses should immediately contact a VR
Counselor who works with deaf/hard of hearing (or RCD/RCHH
–rehabilitation counselor for the deaf/rehabilitation counselor for
hard of hearing) at DARS/DRS (Division for Rehabilitation Services)
for an intake appointment. To find the nearest RCD/RCHH send an email

and give your hometown (if a large city like Houston, give the area
in which you live as well).
