TCU Visiting Professor: Dr. Barbara Gerner de Garcia – DFW

TCU hosts expert on Latino deaf/hard of hearing students

TCUs Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders is hosting a
Green Honors Chair speaker, Dr. Barbara Gerner de Garcia, on Thursday,
March 27 from 3-5 p.m. at the Palko Building Lecture Hall, room 130,
located on Bellaire Drive North on the TCU campus. Dr. Garcias
lecture will be on Teaching Latino Deaf/ Hard of Hearing Students:
Identifying and Meeting Unique Learning Needs.

Dr. Garcia will also give another public lecture on Wednesday, March
26 from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Sid Richardson Sciences Building, Lecture
Hall 2, 2955 S. University Drive on the TCU campus. Her speech topic
will be on Supporting Your Deaf Child.

Dr. Barbara Gerner de Garcia, Professor and Chair of the Department
of Educational Foundations and Research, Gallaudet University,
Washington, DC, teaches Multicultural Foundations of Education, as
well as an online course Teaching Latino Deaf Students. Her
experience in multicultural issues includes 17 years as a teacher of
the deaf in the Boston Public schools, where she implemented and
taught in a trilingual program for Latino deaf children. She has
numerous publications, research, and presentations, as well as
workshops on multicultural issues, and extensive involvement in local
and national organizations dealing with multicultural education. She
holds degrees from Carnegie-Mellon University, Pittsburgh, and Boston
University. In addition to English and ASL, she is fluent in Spanish,
has advanced knowledge of Portuguese, and knowledge of several other
languages.

The events are free and open to the public. Services provided: CART,
sign language interpreter and a Spanish translator; childcare
services will not be provided. For more information, call

West Bowie Street, Sid W. Richardson is the eastern half of the
building on the corner on the left.

Park: parking lot to the east of Mary Couts Burnett Library off of
West Lowden Street and additional parking lots to the east of Sid
Richardson Physical Sciences Building on the corner of West Bowie and
Sandage Street.
