TCD May 2008 Newsletter

Texoma Council for the Deaf Newsletter

Sherman/Denison, Texas

May 2008

We hope you all had a great Mother’s Day with your family and
friends! Great News! The warmer weather is back! School’s are almost
over for the summer and vacations are being planned.

We wanted to tell you how sorry we are about the very late newsletter
due to so many things going on with TCD. We know that you enjoy
reading our monthly newsletters. We do the best as much as we can.

It is unbelievable that our TCD celebrated our first year anniversary
since we had a Grand Opening a year ago. Please join us in celebrating
our one-year anniversary.

We bet that you were looking forward to receiving your Stimulus
refund check from IRS to spend on what you need.

The price for postage stamps was increased by 1 cent to 42 cents on
May 12, 2008.

The price for gas goes up again and forces people to use other
transportation to save money by using less gasoline. It hurts our
economy badly for increases in gas, food and stamps.

In May, TCD hosted Casino game but there were not many people
interested in these games to play. We have decided not to host a
Casino game again for the future. We had so much fun chatting and
meeting some new faces. Some people played the game and enjoyed it.

In May, the board and members of TCD attended Parliamentary Workshop
at Dallas Association of the Deaf (DAD) in Dallas for the whole
weekend. It was worthwhile to attend and learn so much about
Parliamentary. We had so much fun doing the mocks. We thanked Libby
for coming and made great lectures about Parliamentary. We gave her a
thank you card and gift to let her know that we appreciated having her
being there to teach us.

In June, TCD will be hosting the 4th Annual Deaf Picnic on June 28th
at Waterloo Lake Park. After the picnic, we will go to our social
night at Elks Lodge in Sherman. The Cash Bar will be open for anyone
over 21 years old to drink. You can find more information and map at
TCD website. There are some activities for the kids and adults to play
at the picnic. Come and have fun with us.

We had our 2nd sign language class with approximately 9 students for
15 weeks and they enjoy learning sign language. They seem so motivated
to learn signs. We teach sign language class on Tuesdays.

We would like to thank Sam’s Club for the LCD projector for our
TCD. Thanks, Sam’s Club.

We would like to thank Kathy Walters for donating LCD screen for our
LCD projector. Thanks, Kathy Walters.

We would like to thank Tammie, Gregory’s mother, for donating the
brand new grill for our TCD deaf picnic. Thanks, Tammie.

FYI, TCD joined the Sherman Chambers of Commerce as a member. They
will put our TCD in their website to advertise our TCD and referrals.

We really need your help to be on a committee for monthly events.
Please contact Scott at [email protected].

On May 23 & 24, 2008, Deborah Young, vice-president of TCD, attended
at Oklahoma School for the Deaf (O.S.D.) in Sulphur, OK for the
Centennial 100 years Anniversary. When Deborah arrived at O.S.D., She
was shocked to see the fences put up around O.S.D. due to security
reasons. Wow, her classmates and old friends looked so different,
changed and get older. She hasn’t seen them for 34 years and some
friends for 36 years. It has been so long time. Deborah was so happy
to see them again. She stayed at the O.S.D. dorm for two days. The
dorm where she stayed has a lot of changes and now everything is so
new. She really enjoyed at the O.S.D. Reunion and saw friends. Those
people are like a family to her. It was so special moments in her
life. She was so glad that she had the chance to go and got some
flashbacks of old times.

We wished Scott and Lynn the happy anniversary. Wish you both for
more years to continue their marriage.
