Miss Deaf Texas 2007-2009, Katherine “Katie” Deshea Murch, 22, of
Corpus Christi, was selected 1st runner-up Thursday night in the Miss
Deaf America pageant.

“This is an experience that will help me in my life,” said Murch
via e-mail Friday. “I am very proud, and honestly, I see my 1st
runner-up position more like a wing woman role. I am excited to see
what the future brings.”

Murch, a student at Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi and
graduate of Flour Bluff schools, was one of 22 women vying for the
title this week at the New Orleans Marriott during the National
Association of the Deaf biannual convention.

If the newly crowned Miss Deaf America 2008-2010, Michelle Lapides of
Maryland, is unable to fulfil her role then Murch as 1st runner-up
will become the national ambassador for the association’s 28 million
deaf and hard of hearing Americans. If not called for the role, Murch,
who received a $3,000 scholarship, plaque, and bouquet, will continue
her work as Miss Deaf Texas. The pageant’s 2nd runner-up is JoAnn
Benfield of Missouri.

The national pageant’s three-day preliminary competition began
Monday with contestants being judged in private interviews, platform
presentations, talent and evening gown presence. Murch won Best
Platform Presentation, as an advocate for better education for deaf
people, in her preliminary group.

“Katherine stunned all of us during her performance the entire
week,” said Laura Loeb-Hill, a former Miss Deaf Texas now in charge
of the state pageant for Texas Association of the Deaf. “She
represented the Lone Star state well. She definitely excelled in all
areas of the pageant and will always be a winner in our eyes.”

Murch’s family said they were thrilled she represented Texas and
her family “in a way that stole the hearts of so many,” said Lesa
Thomas, Murch’s mother. “Her performances were flawless and she
was absolutely stunning,” Thomas said. “She rocked.”
