Lots of people like to hear rumors – the juicier the better. I’ve
heard several rumors in the past three weeks, but they have all been
false, so I am now starting some TRUE rumors.
1) Jesus Lutheran Church of the Deaf is NOT moving. We have been at
this location across from TSD since 1958, it is paid off and debt
free. We are NOT moving and we are NOT closing. We’ll be here for a
long, long time. This is the BEST location for a Deaf church and we
have a fantastic neighbor right across the street, so here we will
remain.
2) Child Protective Services (CPS) has NOT told us that we can’t have
a child care. They did offer to help us become licensed if we wanted
to become a full day child care, but we told them no, we don’t want to
become a full day child care. A child care center must be licensed if
they have more than 6 children and operate more than 4 hours a day.
Our child care did not meet those requirements, so we didn’t need a
license. We decided to drop the child care and start the
tutoring/homework program because it will be better for the child and
the family.
3) We are NOT canceling our youth programs on Wednesdays and
Thursdays. We will continue to offer programs for Elementary, Middle
School and High School students. Parents and TSD staff are always
encouraged to attend and/or volunteer.
4) We will NOT stop supporting and defending TSD. Since our ministry
started in 1931, Jesus Lutheran Church of the Deaf has been proud of
TSD and the job they do. We see that the administration, faculty and
staff work hard to teach and protect the Deaf children put in their
care, and for that we are thankful and we will continue to do all we
can to work with them, defend them and support them.
5) Jesus Lutheran Church of the Deaf will continue to offer Parents’
Night Out on one Friday per month from 6:00 PM until midnight. We
don’t offer them during the summer because we can’t get volunteers
from UT ASL classes, but now that school is starting again, we will
soon announce our first Parents’ Night Out for this school year.
6) I am NOT running for Miss Deaf Texas! I am a guy, I am not pretty,
I am not young. Actually this is not a rumor I have heard, but I
figure if you have read this far, you could use a smile – so smile!
