Call for Entries – Barbara Jordan Media Awards

Dear Media Professional:

In 1982, a series of prestigious annual awards recognizing
outstanding contributions of the communications media was established
by the Texas Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities. These
awards recognized individuals and organizations for eliminating
attitudinal, social and physical barriers, and encouraging accurate
and progressive portrayals of people with disabilities.

At the suggestion of media advisors, the awards were named for
Barbara Jordan, one of Texas’ most distinguished citizens and foremost
spokespersons for the rights of all human beings. In January of 1996,
we lost Barbara Jordan: a Texas pioneer and champion of our freedom
and constitution. The Texas Governor’s Committee on People with
Disabilities continues to honor her in this program.

The awards, beautiful three-inch bronze medallions designed by David
Deming, an internationally prominent sculptor, are presented to the
winners.

We invite you to submit entries for the Barbara Jordan Media Awards.
The awards acknowledge print and broadcast media professionals who
accurately and positively report on individuals with disabilities.
Each year the decision for the judges becomes more difficult as more
quality entries are received from across the state.

Elements in past winning entries include:

· Using people with disabilities as sources, rather than as
examples.

· Placing coverage in appropriate subject area, eg. sports covered
in sports section.

· Portraying people with disabilities as independent and productive
through use of words and images.

· Focusing on stories about people first and disability second.

We are excited about receiving this year’s nominees! To be eligible,
all entries must have been available for public consumption between
January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2008.

We encourage you to submit a Barbara Jordan Media Award entry now.

Sincerely,

Emily E. Nuñez
