Hurricane Ike – Additional Information

I’m an ASL student at San Antonio College, volunteered 2001–2006 for
the Red Cross, working with a pet shelter during Hurr. Ike. Here’s a
little more info based on my experience.

It appears that Deaf Link will assist with remote interpreting at
shelters.

I suggest that your emergency contact be someone outside the
predicted hurricane path, as well as someone other family /friends
would contact if unable to reach you. Also see “Safe and Well List”
and other info at the San Antonio Red Cross website:

PETS are “important things”. Pack their food, water, medications,
leash /collar /license, and bedding. They will be cared for at
shelters separate from yours. Be sure to pick your pets up before you
return home.

Prescription medicine: Bring the bottles if possible. It’s also a
good idea to keep a list of your meds in your wallet.

Documents: If time is short, the government-issued photo ID, SS card,
residence proof such as utility bill, insurance, and/or wills are the
most important. Birth /death /marriage /deed records are usually on
file with county or state government. You can request certified copies
after the crisis has passed.

Mobile phone: Bring the charger!

Stay safe! Perhaps I’ll meet some of you and your pets over the
weekend.
