MEDIA ALERT

Texas School for the Deaf Students, Teachers Rev Up for Read Captions
Across America Day

Austin, Texas In conjunction with the National Education
Association’s (NEA) ninth annual Read Across America Day on March 2,
2009, students at the Texas School for the Deaf (TSD) will join
millions of their peers across the country to celebrate Read Captions
Across America.

Captions – subtitles carried on DVD, videotape, broadcast TV, and
cable TV – are text forms of the spoken word and often convey sound
effects. Also, an increasing amount of content on the Internet has
sound, with some of it being captioned. While captions were originally
developed for deaf and hard of hearing persons, they are increasingly
used by others to develop reading skills. Read Across America and Read
Captions Across America celebrations mostly fall on Dr. Seuss’s
birthday – when more than 45 million readers, both young and old, are
expected to pick up a book and read. However, both are yearlong
celebrations that aim to show America’s children the joy of reading –
on March 2 and every day.

To honor the good doctor and celebrate the fun and value of reading,
TSD asks you to join us, along with other leading literacy, youth, and
civic groups in America, to unite a nation of readers under one hat –
the red and white stovepipe made famous by the Cat in the Hat – for a
flurry (or furry) of reading excitement!

WHO: Texas School for the Deaf (TSD) elementary students will lounge
in pajamas for a day of reading fun – with books, captioned films,
and American Sign Language (ASL) stories by special guest, Theron
Moore, an accomplished storyteller and performer who offers a unique
and captivating method of communicating without voice.
