MORE: Thanks to The Expedition School’s unique philosophy of using
nature as a classroom, thirteen students from the Texas School for the
Deaf (TSD) experienced a first – a road trip to the Texas coast to
catch some waves that ultimately transformed their lives.

Laura Garcia Rodriguez Blancas, third year exchange-student at the
University of Texas from Monterrey Mexico, directed the film for a
final documentary project. “I had no idea what to expect working
with deaf kids going surfing, and I was intimidated by the task of
creating something appealing to both hearing and deaf audiences.”
Blancas hopes to raise awareness of Deaf culture to the hearing
community with the film. “I think the hearing community
underestimates the deaf, mainly because of our ignorance. But these
kids are amazing. Seeing their incredible courage and positive outlook
on life, has also changed me forever.”

With a strong belief in culture and community at TSD, students form a
unique identity based on their individual strengths and talents. At
TSD, students learn, grow, and belong. For more information about TSD,
