Deaf Interpreter Training – May 31-June 5, 2009

Deaf Interpreter Training

This training, over a one week period, May 31-June 5, 2009, is for
individuals who are deaf and are interested in becoming a deaf
interpreter, and for deaf interpreters who want to upgrade or improve
their interpreting skills. The sessions will provide an environment in
which participants can stretch their interpreting horizons and explore
new approaches in this specialty area. A highly qualified staff will
conduct the training and will include expert trainers in deaf
interpreting: Byron Bridges, Eileen Forestal, Trenton Marsh, Gino
Gouby, and Ann Horn. Areas of focus will include professional roles
and responsibilities, common business practices, laws and regulations
regarding interpreting services, negotiating communication needs,
self-assessment of interpreting performances, role and scope of
service, dealing with testing anxieties, and more.

This training is free and is limited to 40 participants;
pre-registration is required. There is a room and board fee of $175 to
stay on campus for the week. Participants should arrive on the
Southwest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf (SWCID) campus, 3200
Avenue C, Big Spring, Texas, on Sunday, May 31, 2009 between 3 p.m.

which dinner will be served. An introduction and orientation session
will follow. The training sessions will begin on June 1 at 8 a.m. and
to 5 p.m. daily, and will end at 5 p.m. on Friday, June 5. Big Spring
can be reached via the Midland-Odessa Airport. Airport-to-campus
