Position Title – Counselor-Student Disability Services

Position Summary The Academic Counselor assists the Director of
Student Disability Services in the administration of the American with
Disabilities Act of 1974 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of
1973 by providing services to eligible students at the University,
Incarnate Word High School and St. Anthony Catholic High School. The
Academic Counselor assists students who have identified themselves as
disabled to receive reasonable accommodations in accordance with
Federal laws. An important goal of the Office of Student Disability
Services is to increase the retention of students with disabilities
and to foster a supportive institutional climate. The overall
responsibilities of the Academic Counselor focus on facilitating the
delivery of effective services to eligible students. The Academic
Counselor also provides advising support services to the University
Advising Center, when required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (1) Coordinate daily office
operations and delivery of services. (2) Serve as secondary academic
advisor to students with disabilities. (3) Advise students concerning
coursework and degree plans. (4) Assist students in the development of
educational plans. (5) Monitor academic performance of students with
disabilities on scholastic probation or continued scholastic
probation. (6)Continuously document and monitor academic progress of
students receiving services through SDS. (7) Prepare Letters of
Accommodation for University and high school students.

(8) Maintain regular contact (phone, letters, email, SDS BlackBoard)
with students being served throughout the school year to ensure
compliance with prescribed accommodations. (9) Coordinate and
supervise accommodated testing. (10) Present workshops to University
and high schools faculty. (11) Update SDS website as required. (12)
Assist with the creation and dissemination of all internal and
external information in various media about Student Disability
Services. (13) Prepare and maintain SDS student files in accordance
established guidelines. (14) Contact publishing houses to acquire
electronic versions of student’s textbooks and create audio versions
of textbooks in-house as needed. (15)Assist students in acquiring
necessary assistive technology and disability related resources. (16)
Prepare reports as required. (17) Assist students with outside,
disability-related resources/services. (18) Serve as academic advisor
at University Advising Center during periods of high activity.

(19) Perform other duties as assigned by the Director.

Required Education Bachelor of Arts in social science or education

Required Experience Working knowledge the Americans with
Disabilities Act of 1974 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of
1973, as it applies to institutions of higher education. Minimum three
years experience in higher education and/or academic advising,
counseling, serving students with disabilities and/or special needs.
Experience in conflict resolution and crisis intervention. Adept at
handling multiple priorities and meeting deadlines.

Required Certificates, Licenses, or Registrations None

Preferred Qualifications Master’s Degree in education, guidance and
counseling or social work is preferred.

skills. Superior work ethic. Strong writing and research skills.
Ability to work with ethnically diverse students and faculty.
Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills. Ability to work with
professionalism and confidentiality. Knowledge of data base management
systems: Microsoft Office, Windows XP, Excel, Word, Filemaker,
Xtender, etc. Experience with Banner System highly desirable.

FLSA Status Exempt

Salary $30,000 – $35,000 depending of qualificaitons
