Position Title Interpreter- American Sign Language – (Multiple Positions)
Advertised Location: Lone Star College-CyFair & Fairbanks Center
Hiring Range Starting salary commensurate with education and experience.

This is a full-time 10.5-month position.
Position Summary Interprets for Deaf/Hard of Hearing students as they interface
with Lone Star College System faculty, staff, and the community in a variety of
environments. Encourage the enhancement of deaf culture awareness among faculty,
staff, and administrators. Strive to advance in sign language skill proficiency
in order to provide the highest level of interpreter services possible. Support
and promote all students’ right to equity in the classroom.

Position Status Full-time

Essential Job Functions Interprets for faculty and students in the campus and
classroom setting.
Interprets for students, staff, faculty, and administration at various college
functions and events throughout the year, both on-campus and off-campus.

Communicates with and gathers information from faculty in order to effectively
prepare for classroom sessions for both faculty and students.

Encourages the enhancement of deaf culture awareness among faculty, staff, and
students.

Assists the Manager of Interpreters and Captionists with various
responsibilities.

Supports and promotes all faculty and students’ rights to equity in the
classroom and work environment.

Responsible for other reasonable, related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications/Education Campus Specific Associate’s degree or higher
with at least 2 years of related work experience; will consider equivalent
combination of education and experience in lieu of degree.

DARS/BEI Levels I-V or Basic, Advanced, Master level.
RID CI, CT, CSC.
NIC, NIC Advanced, or NIC Master.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Working knowledge of deafness, deaf culture and
the deaf community.

Good written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to set interpreting boundaries in order to avoid overuse and repetitive
motion injuries in the hands, arms, neck, and back.

Demonstrated ability to provide dynamic and proactive educational leadership.

Proven effectiveness in allocating and managing resources

Ability to work a flexible schedule.

Ability to set interpreting boundaries in order to support interpreters.

Demonstrated ability to provide dynamic and proactive educational leadership.

Proven effectiveness in allocating and managing resources.

A thorough knowledge of Deafness, Deaf Culture and the Deaf community.

Excellent interpersonal, supervisory skills and written and oral communication
skills.

Ability to direct and work with a team of professionals, possessing excellent
technical and organizational skills and problem solving ability.

Ability to articulate proficiently in American Sign Language as well as a
working ability of other prevalent sign systems.

Preferred Qualifications/Education Associate’s degree in an Interpreter Training Program or related field.
DARS/BEI Level II.
Bachelor’s degree.
Experience interpreting in a post-secondary educational environment.
Community college experience.
