BAREFOOT IN THE PARK is a light-hearted romantic comedy written by one of
the most popular playwrights in the world. Neil Simon’s plays are produced
in numbers only second to those of Shakespeare!
Set in 1964, newlywed couple Corie and Paul Bratter are setting up house in
a minuscule fifth-floor walkup apartment in a downtown Manhattan brownstone.
The two must contend with a lack of heat, a skylight with a gaping hole,
several long flights of stairs, an oddball neighbor and a well-meaning
mother, in addition to adjusting to married life. Despite all this, as they
say, “hilarity ensues.”
Inspired by the early days of his own marriage, this was Simon’s second play
and his first runaway hit. The Broadway production ran nearly four years.
Simon later wrote the screenplay for the 1967 movie starring its New York
star, Robert Redford.
