Call for Interpreters and SSPs for the Deafblind Awareness Conference, San
Marcos, TX
Training April 24 or May 1, 2010 at 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Are you interested in working in a paid position an Interpreter and/or as a
SSP for the Deafblind Awareness Conference in June 11 – 13, 2010? If you
are, please contact Lucinda Reyna at DARS Deafblind Services at 512-377-0588
or email [email protected] to sign up for one of the
pre-conference trainings and to obtain a Texas vendor ID # if you do not
already have one. Deadline to sign up for training is 5 days prior to the
event. If you are not able to attend the training, you can still sign up as
a vendor and possibly be contacted to work. However preference will be
given first to those who attend the training and meet other criteria.
The training will be lead by Nancy Riley, Kristin Lund along with Kris Cue
and Kim Powers-Smith. There will also be a panel of consumers with various
communication needs who will share their personal experiences as well as
training on guiding techniques.
Due to time constraints, no CEUs are offered for the training. Independent
study CEUs can be arranged by going to TSID’s website at

A background check will be required before you can work as an SSP whether
you attend the training or not. A copy of your background check can be
obtained from the Department of Public Safety (DPS) on North Lamar. Please
note that BEI certified interpreters have already completed this part. You
must submit a copy of your background report to Lucinda Reyna by May 17,
2010. Even if you attend the training and sign up as a vendor, you will not
be called to work as an SSP unless we have a background check in file for
you. Persons with serious criminal history problems will not be accepted
for work as an SSP.
1. Contact Lucinda Reyna to sign up for training at least 5 days before the
training date (April 19 for April 24th training, April 26 for May 1st
training) and as a vendor by May 3, 2010.
2. Send your background check report to Lucinda via fax 512-377-0592, drop
off in person or mail at 4900 N. Lamar, Ste. 220, Mail Code 1409, Austin,
TX 78756, or email as attachment [email protected] by May 17,
2010.
3. Attend the pre-conference training on April 24 or May 1 at 9 am – 5 pm:
Criss Cole Rehabilitation Center (CCRC), 4800 N. Lamar, Austin TX
Working at the conference:
Interpreters will be needed for platform interpreting, tactile interpreting,
and close vision interpreting. The pay for interpreters will vary depending
on the interpreting agency.
SSP’s will be needed to interpret visual information and as a human guide
for Deafblind persons attending the conference. The pay for SSPs will be
$10.50 an hour for those who do not attend the training. Those who attend
the training will be paid $12.50 an hour.
