SIGNING SANTA MEETS CHILDREN WITH HEARING LOSS
Santa Uses American Sign Language To Chat with Children Who Have Hearing
Loss Corpus Christi, Texas – Did you know that Santa can use his hands for
something more than giving gifts and feeding reindeer? Santa travels all
over the world and knows many languages, including American Sign Language.
On Saturday, December 11, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Signing Santa and
his helper elves will be at the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Center to
communicate and share gifts with deaf and hard of hearing children. These
children will not have to miss out on this special rite of childhood just
because they cannot hear. Santa and his helpers will see that their visit
with Santa is clearly accessible to the children.
In addition to being able to talk to Santa and have their picture taken with
him and his helpers, the children and their family will enjoy a free
breakfast and a presentation of Christmas carols signed by the Flour Bluff
ASL Club. Also, holiday craft building in Santa’s Workshop will be provided
by volunteers from the Del Mar College Interpreter Club and Corpus Christi
Interpreters for the Deaf will be providing gift bags. In keeping with this
holiday’s giving spirit, volunteers from Kohl’s Department Store A- Team and
King High School ASL students will be taking care of decorations, gift
wrapping, cooking, and play with the children while parents share with each
other.
The Deaf & Hard of Hearing Center was established as a non-profit
organization in 1978 to build communication bridges for deaf and hard of
hearing people in South Texas. Services provided include interpretation
services, literacy classes, ASL classes, advocacy, recreation programs,
public education about hearing loss, and more. For additional information on
the organization or Signing Santa, please contact the Deaf Center at (361)
993-1154 or [email protected].
