ASL in Space!
Did you know that on July 22, 2010, for the very first time, an ASL message
was sent from space to audiences here on Earth? See below…
Message from space
NASA Astronaut Tracy Caldwell Dyson sends an ASL message from the
International Space Station answering questions about her work on the
station and how she learned sign language.

Tracy Caldwell Dyson, NASA Astronaut fluent in American Sign Language, made
her launch to the ISS (International Space Station) on April 2, 2010.
Note: NASA astronaut Tracy Caldwell is fluent in a conversational
(intermediate) level of American Sign Language. So far, she is the only NASA
astronaut to claim this ability and we look forward to NASA making use of
her knowledge of ASL.
Here is a quote from a recent news item:
QUOTE:
Caldwell has a PhD in chemistry. She is also the only member in the current
ISS [International Space Station] crew to have previous space experience. In
August 2007, she spent 12 days in space onboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour,
as it delivered new equipment to the ISS. Interestingly, she married in
November last year, while undergoing her space training course.
