TWO TRAININGS IN AUSTIN TX SEPT 22-24, 2011
ACCESS TO COUNSEL: INTERPRETERS AT THE TABLE
September 22 and 23, 2011, 9 am – 4 pm
Legal Interpreters are increasingly expected to sit at counsel table,
interpret private conversations between counsel and client, provide
information about interpreting to the litigation team, and monitor the
proceedings interpreters for accuracy. This workshop will focus on a
systematic effort to train interpreters for this unique aspect of their role
in court. This advanced workshop will provide interpreters with practical
experience in discussing a model of interpretation analysis, use of that
model to analyze interpreter legal texts and bring substantive errors to the
attention of the court. They will learn the additional duties as expert
witnesses and explore case law that has attempted to define this function of
the counsel-table interpreter.
INTERPRETING THE GUILTY PLEA AND OTHER COMMON LEGAL TEXTS
September 24, 2011, 9 am – 4 pm
This training will include a discussion of the history of the plea, its
constitutional purpose, an analysis of its discourse, application of the
discussion to interpretation, hands on interpretation and feedback. It will
be presented in ASL so this is a good opportunity to participate in a high
level discussion in ASL regarding complex legal topics.
