Purple Communications™, Inc., a leading provider of innovative
communications for people who are deaf, hard of hearing or speech-impaired,
is a proud sponsor of this year’s Clerc Classic, a high school basketball
and cheerleading tournament consisting of more than 300 boys and girls teams
from eight deaf schools across the United States.
“We are extremely excited to sponsor this year’s Clerc Classic,” said
Director of Large Accounts Sam Costner. “The dedication, determination,
drive and spirit of these students are an inspiration to Purple and the deaf
community – it’s an honor to participate.
The Clerc Classic began 12 years ago in honor of Laurent Clerc. Clerc, who
was deaf, is widely responsible for developing educational programs
specifically for deaf students in the United States. Teaching for 50 years,
Clerc positively impacted thousands of deaf students, with many becoming
community leaders, spearheading the creation of schools for the deaf
throughout the country. Today, several states across the United States
practice Clerc’s teaching methods.
“This is much more than just a sponsorship – it’s about building community,”
said Vice President of Large Accounts Henry “Hank” Klopping, Ed.D. “As
former superintendent of the California School for the Deaf, Fremont, I have
fond memories of hosting the Clerc Classic and I’m thrilled that I have the
opportunity to continue to support such a great event working with Purple.”
Participating schools include California School for the Deaf, Riverside,
California School for the Deaf, Fremont, Alabama School for the Deaf, Model
Secondary School for the Deaf, Illinois School for the Deaf, Maryland School
for the Deaf, Texas School for the Deaf, and this year’s host, Indiana
School for the Deaf.
“Purple makes it a point to give back to the community whenever they can,
and sponsoring this year’s Clerc Classic shows Purple’s continuing
dedication to the community,” said Indiana School for the Deaf Athletic
Director Paul Wood. “We are very excited to have their support and look
forward to a successful tournament!”
