Introducing the Castle:
The Academy House became part of the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, a Texas Historic Landmark in 1985, and is also an Austin Landmark. This grand 1889 residence has a wonderfully rich, diverse history.
According to the Austin American Statesman, in 1889, Myron D. Mather, president of Austin Water, Light & Power Co., built the three-story home using granite left over from the Capitol construction. In the 1920’s, it served as the Austin Military School, and lent its name to Academy Drive. Then, a Texas Supreme Court justice briefly resided at the Academy house. In the 1940’s, Roy and Elithe Kirkland purchased the property. Dr. Kirkland, a medical doctor, treated patients in his living room office. Mrs. Kirkland was the author of multiple Texas-related historical novels.
The current owners, Hugh and Claudette Lowe, purchased the Academy House in the1980’s and began renovating this wonderful historical home. They have preserved the rich history and have added some very interesting pieces for viewing. For instance, the house has an Academy House Interioramazing belvedere on the roof, from which an incredible view of downtown Austin can be seen. This feature gives the home its “Castle” nickname. For more historical detail, see this article by the Austin American Statesman.
Please join us for a tour of this Historic Austin gem! The entire house will be on tour. You will have a chance to hear stories about the history of the house as well as a brief history of The Texas School for the Deaf.
