FOR RELEASE FEBRUARY 27, 2014
Texas School for the Deaf Hosts Gallaudet University’s 2014
Southwest Regional Academic Bowl for Deaf and Hard of Hearing High School Students
February 27 – March 1, 2014
Austin, Texas – February 27, 2014 Academic teams from 12 southwestern U.S. states arrive at the Texas School for the Deaf (TSD) today for a weekend of intense competition among high school students who are deaf and hard of hearing.
WHAT: The Academic Bowl was established in 1997 at Gallaudet University – the world’s only liberal arts university in which all programs and services are designed to accommodate students who are deaf and hard of hearing – in Washington D.C.
Academic Bowl competitions consist of a series of quiz-show style question and answer games of general knowledge and quick recall. High school teams and individual students compete to be the first to correctly answer questions drawn from the following categories: history and government; language and literature; science and technology; geography; mathematics; the arts; deaf studies; current events; and pop culture, leisure, and sports.
The Southwest Regional Competition at TSD features 12 deaf and hard of hearing high school teams from Colorado, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arizona and Texas – including local-area teams from McNeil High School, San Marcos High School, and of course, Texas School for the Deaf.
WHEN: Thursday February 27, 2014 – Saturday, March 1, 2014
Teams arrive Thursday evening for opening ceremonies at 6:30 p.m.
Preliminary matches are held on Friday and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
