“A code of professional conduct is a necessary component to any profession to maintain standards for the individuals within that profession to adhere. It brings about accountability, responsibility and trust to the individuals that the profession serves.”(RID Code of Professional Conduct) Under the illustrative behavior of the second tenet “Professionalism,” you will find the responsibility to “judiciously provide information or referral regarding available interpreting or community resources without infringing upon consumers’ rights.”

In order to assist in complying with this obligation, this session will provide insight on two things: (a) recent court decisions describing the obligations of colleges and graduate schools in serving deaf students; and (b) recent joint guidance from the U.S. Department of Education and Department of Justice related to the “effective communication” requirements for public schools. The presenter will be Brian East, an senior attorney in the Austin office of Disability Rights Texas.
